Propolis - The natural antibiotic bees

Propolis (bee glue or propolis also called) is a rubbery, sticky, resinous, thermoplastic material. Certain worker bees collect resin from buds, leaves and tree bark. Commodity supply mainly poplar, willow, chestnut, fir, spruce and larch. In the hive, the resin is mixed with wax and pollen, and with a special salivary secretions to make it pliable. The honey bees use propolis as a building material for mending - and insulation, and disinfect the entire hive. The bees thus protect their homes against drafts, moisture and microbes. Propolis is even a limited protection against radioactive radiation for the bees.
At the entrance of the hive is a defensive barrier of propolis, which serves as the returning bees simultaneously disinfecting doormat. This function has also given its name to the propolis. The word propolis comes from the Greek and is composed of the word "Pro", German "before" and the word "polis" German "city".The name actually means "(defense) against a city."
Propolis is one of the most effective, natural antibiotics. It has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activity. It provides the hive protection against infection. In the summer, live 40,000 to 60,000 bees in a very cramped space. This requires absolute cleanliness. Thus, the cells can be disinfected before each oviposition with a microscopically thin layer of propolis. Todgestochene invaders that are too large to be carried out of the floor, such as mice or snakes are covered with propolis and mummified, so that their corruption poisons not endanger the health of the colony.

Well-known and yet rediscovered

History

The knowledge that man has enough of propolis, not quite as far back as the honey. But we know that already several thousand years before our time, the priests of ancient Egypt knew this stuff and used it in large quantities in the chemical and the art of mummification of their dead.
Even with the Incas, the antibiotic effect of propolis was known.
Propolis was primarily known as germ-inflammatory remedy and has been from the ancient Greeks to Napoleon, to the Russians in the 2nd World War with war wounds as a wound healing agent used.
With us, the healing properties of propolis was largely forgotten. Some beekeepers and some naturopaths knowledge has been preserved luckily. Propolis has for some time back home in many pharmacies a fixed location.
Today propolis undergoes a renaissance. In the era of antibiotics, the second after its triumphant Competed World War, it was believed to have better than propolis. The antibiotic weapons are no longer. We are increasingly confronted with resistant germs. Propolis has lost nothing of its effectiveness, it finally put many millions of years of evolutionary experience. Propolis is a substance that contains a lot of different components that are variable in their concentration (why can not standardize propolis). This explains the fact, however, that there is no resistance to propolis. Propolis has also against viral and fungal infections. This makes propolis interest to research and a whole army of scientists is now trying to discover the secret of its effectiveness.

The extraction of propolis

If beekeepers propolis from the hives break out and scratch, they have to be very careful. In a completely freed from propolis hive the bees were exposed to environmental influences defenseless and could not survive. Thus one has gone over very close-knit grid to use as Propolisfallen. Namely bees fill all the holes that do not exceed a certain size (3.7 mm) with propolis. Larger holes they seal it with wax. Nevertheless, the yield is low, and people per year can benefit from our bees about 100 - 150 g Rohpropolis be won.
Most propolis comes from South America and from Asia to us on the market. There allow other bee species and the climatic conditions the collection of far greater quantities propolis.
In Germany, the free sale of propolis because of the pharmaceutical law is controversial. There is no general scheme it currently is not. Prohibited in some states, the authorities beekeepers principle. Sale and distribution on the grounds that propolis is a medicine and pharmacy only as such In no case should be referred to a specific therapeutic effect. Meanwhile there are many Propolispräparate, which you can order in pharmacies or on the Internet.
The resinous shares the Propolis make quite sticky. Stains on clothing and on the skin can be cleaned with nail polish remover or cleaning agents that are suitable for the removal of synthetic resin paints.

Application of propolis

Dosage:  Adults 1 drop per kg body weight, take divided into 3-4 doses per day. If taken on bread or honey is best suited.
Please always start with 2-3 drops, since there can be allergic to propolis.
In the pharmacy or in well-stocked health food stores you can find propolis lozenges, toothpaste, mouthwash, skin creams and capsules for health care.
Propolis can be aerosolized in special devices and is used in this application form for chronic respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis, allergies). Some wellness hotels offer inhalations with beehive air directly from the hive.

What characteristics does the propolis?

For the healing properties of propolis, various acids (the best known is acetylsalicylic acid - aspirin) made and the high concentration of flavonoids responsible. This alone may not be the secret of the versatile effect. Rather, it is probably not far from the large number of studied over 270 substances (minerals, vitamins, trace elements) present in propolis in an inimitable combination.

These agents ...

  • support the phagocytes (scavenger cells in the human immune system)
  • inhibit the pain-producing prostaglandins
  • Free radicals fight
  • accelerate wound healing
  • bind toxic heavy metals
  • counteract excessive histamine release (inflammation)
  • strengthen blood vessels and cell membranes
  • protects the skin and mucous membranes
  • have antidepressant effects
  • reduce the side effects of chemo-and radiotherapy
  • counteract the gums regression and strengthens the teeth
Please note that taking propolis not visit the doctor with health complaints replaced. Propolis can be used to support, among other drugs.

When a bee stings

Bee venom is dreaded by most people because it is very painful and even dangerous to people with allergies.
When the bee stings, the sting remains with the sting back into the skin. It pulls the bee to a fatal injury.
Even in ancient Egypt, the healing effect of bee venom in rheumatic diseases was known. These diseases are still the most important field of bee venom. Many therapists use but no longer the natural bee sting to treat their patients, but to use bee venom, which was prepared as a solution for injection, similar neural therapeutics.
In Asian countries where a lot of working with acupuncture, we know the treatment of Apipunktur. Here, the sting apparatus of the bee is used as acupuncture needle.

The effect of bee venom

Besides several other proteins is the main ingredient of bee venom mellitin.

Bee venom acts ...

  • the circulation.
  • bactericidal, fungicidal and virucidal.
  • promote the body's own cortisol formation and other hormones such as ACTH and epinephrine.
  • Blood thinning / anticoagulant.
  • cytostatic (against tumors).
  • Reduce cholesterol.
  • analgesic in neuralgia.
  • positive effect on the nervous system.
Before each bee sting treatment should be carefully examined whether an allergy exists. In case of hypersensitivity desensitization is necessary.

ΤΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ Η ΜΕΛΙΣΣΟΘΕΡΑΠΕΙΑ?

Apitherapy

What is Apitherapy?
The word Apitherapy is Latin Apis (bee) and Greek therapeuein (method for treating humans or animals against various diseases), ie Apitherapy is the therapeutic use of bee products such as honey, pollen, royal jelly, propolis, etc., for therapeutic and preventive.
Most often, the term is used to describe Apitherapy therapeutic use of Apitoxins  (bee venom), but today is also known as Apitoxiterapia. In this case, therapy is mainly based on the inoculation of apitoxina, either by placing the bee on the patient's skin to itch and inoculate it, or by direct inoculation by injection. In any case, we recommend additionally consume other bee products to achieve more effective results in synergy.
Scientific studies are discovering the therapeutic properties of all bee products, apitherapy considering importance as a method of alternative medicine given the beneficial health effects.

HISTORY APITHERAPY
The exact origin of apitherapy is difficult to determine and may be registered even in ancient Egypt, Greece and China. Honey and other bee products have been used for thousands of years and their healing properties have been included in various religious texts like the Vedas, the Bible and the Koran.
Bees are on Earth for over 50 million years ago , fossils testify to the existence of bugs in the Paleozoic era, long before the appearance of man.
The cave paintings of Europe dating from 10,000 BC depict man harvesting honey, so that from the beginning has been considered a very popular product and for healing diseases (Richard Jones, Bee World, 1997).
The Hindu , 4,000 years BC, and used honey as food and propolis as a remedy for wounds (Potschinkova, 1996).
3000 years ago BC appears first record written in Apitherapy, a Sumerian tablet dated around 3000 BC in Mesopotamia, which was a requirement of the use of honey to treat skin infections or ulcers (Jones, 1997).
The Egyptian Traditional Medicine (Medical Papyrus), for 2,000 years BC, very frequently used bee products, especially honey, wax and propolis ("black wax"). Propolis was used along with other ingredients to embalm the bodies of the pharaohs to death and keep them well mummified.
Around 400 BC, Hippocrates , the Father of Medicine, used bee venom and honey recommended for many diseases, especially external use for wounds.
The Chinese medicine since more than 2000 years, also been widely used bee products in medicinal uses for numerous indications, as attested to numerous writings and doctors of that culture: "The fifty-two recipes" 200 BC, "Book Herbal " Sheng Nong year 10 AD, Dr. Zhan Zhongjing 150-219 AD, Dr. Tao Hongjing 452-536 AD, Dr. Liu Yuxi 841 dc; "wise prescriptions" Hospital Song 992 dc; "food herbs" Dr. Li Gao 1180-1251,"Classification and identification of herbs" Dr. Li Shizhen 1518-1593, "Law Brief Innate Knowledge" of Fang Yizhi 1611-1671.
In the years 742-814 AD, Charlemagne , the great conqueror was miraculously cured of chronic gout bee stings.
One of the first references to literature containing solids about the healing properties of honey is the Koran.
And in the nineteenth and twentieth prestigious doctors wrote books which describe in detail the benefits of bee venom, as in the case of Dr. CW Wolf in his book "Apis Meliffica or honeybee venom considered as a therapeutic " in 1858 and Dr. Bodog Beck in his book "Bee Venom Therapy"in 1935. Dr. Philip Terc in 1888 published the results of their study "Report on a Peculiar Connection between bites of bees and rheumatism" , was the first research scientist to describe the medical use of bee venom and therefore considered the father of apitherapy.
In 1920 Japan began acupuncture with bees called Apipuntura .
And in the last 50 years many countries in Europe, mainly in the U.S. and China have conducted scientific studies that support the therapeutic action of all bee products. Many of these studies have been and are supported and published by Apimondia, International Federation of Beekeepers' Associations.

THERAPEUTIC USES OF BEE VENOM
While apitherapy includes the use and consumption of bee products such as honey, pollen, ... with important therapeutic properties, the term is often associated with therapy with bee venom. This therapy is used as a treatment to dissolve scar tissue (keloids) and diseases like  arthritis ,  the bursitis,  the tendinitis ,  shingles , cancer, arthritis and multiple sclerosis, among other conditions.
The best known use is in all kinds of rheumatism arthritis deformans, osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatic fever, etc.. by several effects:
  • Its great action pain reliever, 80 times higher than morphine, so the bee venom is the greatest painkiller without side effects;
  • Its powerful anti-inflammatory action due largely to the main active component of the venom is melittin;
  • Its strong immune correcting effect, in part, the erroneous immune response that occurs in autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis;
  • Its enormous power antibiotic that slows the development of bacterial diseases such as rheumatic fever.
Another important therapeutic action, and little known, is the antitumor action of bee venom, as it contains an enzyme (phospholipase A2) that kills tumor cells and not healthy cells because they have a "contraenzima" that inhibits . This antitumor effect attached to the analgesic effect and its immune stimulating effect, provide beneficial properties for cancer.
Other properties are little known apitoxina: its action on glandular dysfunctions because it acts on the pituitary gland that regulates other glands, and their effects as neurostimulator, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective (liver function improvement), antiallergic, correction of cardiac arrhythmias , regulating blood pressure and cholesterol .....

APITHERAPY TREATMENT
There is no standardized method for the application of bee venom. Some maintain that the location of the bite is important, since for them the sting acts as a type of acupuncture in combination with the effects of poison, while others indicate otherwise.
The number of stings also varies, from a few to hundreds and can be administered by injection or by live bees.
It has recently been achieved bee venom extraction in the laboratory by applying safer dosage can better control the application site and reducing the risk of infections.
This treatment can cause pain or even cause death if the person is allergic to bee stings, which may produce a shock  anaphylactic . Therefore apitherapy centers sensitivity tests are performed prior to initiation of therapy.

Treating Multiple Sclerosis with Bee Venom Therapy

AltMeds.com, 12/3/2011

Bee Venom therapy, sometimes called Bee Sting therapy, is a form of Apitherapy that may be a helpful treatment for those suffering from Multiple Sclerosis.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is characterized by destruction of the myelin protective sheath that covers the spinal cord and nerves. While it is not clear why MS occurs, some believe it is an auto immune problem in which the immune system starts attacking the central nervous system. The tears, rips, and open spots in the covering of the nerves can “short circuit” the electrical signals that the brain and body use to communicate with one another.

Those who have MS suffer from symptoms that include hot flashes, dizziness, and incoordination. MS is a degenerative disease, meaning it progressively gets worse. There is currently no cure for MS. There are several medications that may help with some of the symptoms, but they have side effects. One of the treatments for MS, making a comeback from ancient Egyptian times, is bee venom therapy.

Why does bee venom help those with MS?

Bee venom therapy uses live honey bees for the benefits of their stingers. Some patients with MS who use bee venom therapy have noted decreased pain, increased coordination, and increased muscle strength.

So why would a bee sting help those with MS? Scientists believe it is because of two main ingredients in bee venom—adolapin and melittin. These compounds may reduce the pain and inflammation associated with MS. Bee venom therapy as a whole is thought to encourage the human body to release natural healing defenses to protect itself from the sting. These chemicals may heal other ailments in the body.

Pat Wagner, also known as “The Bee Lady” was diagnosed with MS at age 19. She claims on her website that bee venom therapy is the best treatment for MS. After receiving her initial bee stings, her hearing improved as well as her internal thermostat. She no longer felt chills, and she started moving around without her wheel chair. Her husband was so encouraged with her development that he bought a bee hive. She still uses bee venom therapy to this day…

Bee Venom Therapy a Popular Chinese Treatment for MS, Arthritis, Shingles

Bee Venom Therapy is Making Quite a Buzz in Beijing
Time Out Beijing, October 2011

After being approved as an official medical practice by the Chinese government in 2007, the buzz around apitherapy (otherwise known as fengliao) has made it the fastest growing trend in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The treatment, which involves the use of honeybees for medicinal purposes, is being increasingly incorporated into the regimen of local hospitals and has been touted as a cure for everything from multiple sclerosis to shingles.

Dropping by the Shunyi Apitherapy Hospital to try out its ‘bee venom therapy’, we can’t help but wonder if getting stung by bees in order to improve your health can really work?

As abrasive as it may sound, the therapy is a lot more complicated than simply swatting the nearest hornets’ nest. Our doctor selects a live bee with his tweezers (to ensure the potency of the poison), kills it with a quick squeeze, and, with a steady hand, positions the stinger with surgical precision. Incorporating other aspects of Chinese medicine, the stinger is then applied to the acupuncture points best suited to where the patient’s ailment lies.

Despite its folk medicine vibe, there is science behind the treatment. The poison is thought to be of benefit because the sting causes the body to emit anti-inflammatory hormones; these are said to help reduce swelling in injury – although anyone allergic to bee stings should stay clear. From a TCM point of view, the acupuncture points connect to key nerve paths and these help to distribute the ‘heat’ and healing effect from the bee’s poison…

210 8237302 helpline@arthritis.org.gr ).
